The English 178 course is broken up into Main Lectures and Tutorials. In order to complete the course you need to attend one main lecture and two tutorials a week. The main lecture series features a number of prescribed texts, each of which is taught for four weeks. The main lectures are also augmented by a support tutorial which is designed to help you get to grips with the material.

The remaining tutorial is entirety independent of the material taught in the main lectures. In the first semester these tutorial will focus on poetry and in the second semester the focus shifts to short stories. For these tutorials you will be expected to write one long essay [1200 – 1500 words] per semester. For these essays you will also be expected to write a draft, on which your tutor will provide extensive feedback to help you write the best possible long essay.
For the tutorials and the main lectures alike you are expected to come prepared, by reading the primary text and going over the relevant course notes. To get the most out of the course it is strongly recommended that you also attempt to read as many of the secondary readings as possible.
