Victorian Reading Group

If you're keen to get more out of English 178 and love the romanticism of the Victorian era, please get involved with the Victorian Reading Group. You can do so by contacting by going online and following The Old Curiosity Shop blog. The reading group will meet once a week and is aimed at fostering a love of all literature Victorian in the hearts and minds of any budding young literary scholar.

The reading group will require you to prepare for each session, but as the texts are going to be short it won't place any undue pressure on your already busy schedule, (The shortest texts, will be cartoons and the longest, short stories) and provide a great place to meet like-minded fellow students who you might otherwise only come into contact with at a post-graduate level.

The "Little" and Big Trick

If you're unsure of how to format a title of a poem, play, novel or film in your essay  just think of the "little" and big trick to MLA titling. All smaller texts from a collection, anthology or course handout, should be indicated by the use of "quotation marks" in your essay. The title of the larger works, for instance the collection, anthology or course handout itself, along with the titles of books, plays and movies should be indicated with Italics.

If you're still not sure visit About.com for more information and a list of titles to format in either quotations or italics.

Literary Theory

Making use of literary theory to perform a reading or strengthen your argument can be very daunting at first. But there are a few books which can help ease you into the seemingly abstract world of literary criticism. A couple of great resources to have as a student of English Literature are Peter Barry's Beginning Theory: An introduction to literary and cultural theory and The Routledge  Dictionary of Literary Terms. You can download PDF's versions of both of these by clicking on the links below.

Remember to reference them properly when you quote from them (For information on how to do this click here).

Beginning Theory: An introduction to literary and cultural theory

The Routledge  Dictionary of Literary Terms

The Beginning Theory PDF sadly lacks page numbers so it should not be used for post-graduate references, but you'll be able to get away with it at undergraduate level. I hope it helps.
